House Update: Kitchen Floors

The smartest and I have been pondering doing some little things around the house to spice things up a little bit and make us re-fall in love with our happy little home. One of the biggest things we had discussed was updating our incredibly nasty linoleum with some faux wood flooring. We had talked... and dreamed... and talked... and dreamed... and suddenly last Thursday we decided there was no time like the present and we set about actually doing something about all of our talking and dreaming.

We went and picked out our flooring- we decided to go with self-stick vinyl floors (the same ones that the BHO used when we did her bedroom last year).

I started ripped the baseboards off on Friday afternoon- with some only sort of helpful help from the puppy.

After all of the baseboards had been successfully removed with limited break-age, we set about moving the appliances. To the living room. Where they would stay. All weekend long.

We primed the floors Friday night so they would have time to dry.

And we started actually laying the wood early Saturday morning, fueled by Chick-fil-a and floor-lust.

We finished the flooring on Saturday evening, and put off the appliance moving until Sunday afternoon. After a couple hours of baseboard nailing and some heavy lifting (on the smartest's side, I was basically useless)- we had this:

Just for comparison sake... here is where the kitchen started out originally, and a couple of stages we've been through since then:

What sort of home improvement shenanigans have you been up to lately?

  1. Love the floors!! We plan to do the self-stick plank floors next month as well, and can't wait. I also am obsessed with that blue wall color, it would be perfect for our spare room. Thanks for the inspiration!!

    2. Hi Rachael!

I will definitely try to hunt around for my swatches! We painted a couple of years ago, and our house tends to be a bit of a black hole, but I will definitely see what I can find! I can't wait to hear how your floors go!

      Cheers!

  2. WOW what a big impact that change had. I love it! I think Vinyl wood floors are such a smart move for a kitchen area for a quick inexpensive makeover. Love what you did here!

    1. Thank you! We were really happy with the "bang for your buck" quotient. We keep getting distracted as we walk from one side of the house to the other... just staring at the utter lack of linoleum!

      Cheers!

  3. Turned out Great! We used the same product in our basement since it's prone to some wetness so laminate or hardwood were not an option. It couldn't be easier to install!

We just redid our kitchen floors too, but since that's on the main level where the rest of the floors are hardwood we matched it with hardwood and refinished all of it! It was a ton of work but we just moved the appliances back in and it was so worth going the DIY route with that too!

    1. I had actually wondered how this sort of flooring did in a damp environment. We have been pondering using it in the bathrooms, but the smartest is worried that the moisture won't be great for it. Is it holding up pretty well in your basement? We had a TERRIBLE time moving our appliances around- we tried to use those little furniture feet sliders, but they didn't work as well as we had hoped. Any appliance moving tips?

      Cheers!

  4. WOW! What a transformation! I love the new flooring. Is it just stick-on flooring? It looks very realistic in these photos.
