Why I'm Throwing in the Towel on Perfection

I'm sitting in my living room, staring at my white walls, attempting to decide on a color to paint them. I've put it off for nearly two years, because its a rather tall room, and I really liked the white just fine, but recently I started feeling as though the holes needed to be patched, and a fresh coat of paint might be in order. This is one of the many reasons that I hate spring. My spring cleaning/reorganizing/painting gene explodes after its winter hibernation, demanding that I organize EVERYTHING. Paint every available surface. And chastise myself for not doing so already. Oh, and the tornadoes. I don't love that about spring either.

When I'm in search of design ideas, I always turn to Pinterest. Because that is what Pinterest is for- to house your creative thoughts and provide tutorials on how to make salsa from scratch, and match your pillows to your bed in a subtle yet beautiful way. Pinterest is home to all of the answers to my questions, but it is also home to the most doubt inducing images that one can find on the internet.

Pinterest advertises perfection. This isn't Pinterest's fault, by the way, its just doing its job. I love it and use it for everything from recipes to recording party ideas for my alter ego, who actually throws parties. But when it comes to my house... looking at Pinterest leaves me with a sense that my taste isn't good enough. That my house isn't good enough. That the things that I like must be innately incorrect, because there are articles entitled things like "Uhoh. How to decorate with that brown couch" and "How to mix patterns the RIGHT way." You know what you don't find in decorating articles? Permission to combine the use of pillows that feature animal heads, plaid, paisley blankets, a turquoise antique telephone, and your family Pendleton rug that you adore in the same room.

I closed Pinterest maybe three minutes after opening it, which is a record for me. And I came to a conclusion that I probably should have arrived at a long time ago. Perfect isn't universal. Perfect for me is going to be 100% different than perfect for someone else, because I have different tastes and demands on my life. Because I am a unique little snowflake who likes animal head pillows. And because my husband is a techny little snowflake, and needs to have copious amounts of space for computers and gadgets and things that plug in and make weird sounds. I'm not going to find another couple like us that I can steal ideas from. But that doesn't mean that my idea of perfect is any less valid. It just means that perfect for me is perfect for me.

And when you see it, if you know me, chances are you won't look at it and think "Oh good grief. Didn't anyone tell you that its a major mistake to use those prints next to each other?" You'll probably think "This looks exactly like you." And you'll think that it looks just the way it should in my house, because I am a little cloud of chaos and you wouldn't expect anything else. And you'll make sure you never ask me for decorating advice... which is probably for the best. Because I believe that plaid does indeed belong in every room of the house. And on all of my favorite clothes...

A Magpie Post

Growing up, we lived in an area that had an abundance of magpies. It is the nature of magpies to gather shiny things- which can often make their nests beautiful and eclectic creations full of spunk and sparkle.

Sometimes I think I might have a little magpie DNA running through my veins.

In true magpie fashion, I have been scouring the town for pretty things, and have returned home to share them with you:

For those of you following me on Pinterest, these probably aren't news to you. For those of you who aren't super about Pinterest quite yet... it is the ultimate magpie paradise. See my shiny nest here.

Searching for Spring

Every year, during the month of March, I clean out the smartest and I's closet. I move our sweaters and warm clothing to a different closet, and retrieve my sundresses from hiding. And every year, the weekend after I do my wardrobe rotation, spring smacks me upside the head and runs away.

Every. Year. Is it any wonder that spring is my least favorite season?

Over the last couple of months, we have had maybe 3 days that have been in the 30s. Maybe. Guess how many we have had since last week's rearranging? 4. At least. Oh spring... just when I thought we might be able to be friends

So rather than actually celebrating spring... I will window shop online to my little heart's content, while blasting the heater and burrowing under multiple blankets. Take that, spring, winter and I are perfectly happy to wait for you to arrive.

The Overly Ambitious Event Planner

Do you guys ever get completely sucked into the idea of throwing a severely over the top party? Usually this happens to me while I'm browsing Pinterest (or while I am doing invitation designs)- I come across gorgeous food ideas and thrifty decor options and I am suddenly overcome with the party throwing itch.

Seeing as I have a lack of cause to be throwing an over the top shindig (and lack the self confidence... I'm always afraid people will judge my bubbly and overly excited spirit)- I thought I would throw a little online bash for all of you delightful folk.

You are cordially invited to my Salute to Spring:

I will be serving:

Coconut square
Watermelon Bites
Hummus Bites
Cheesecakes
Glitter Cookies
Taco Bites

And decorating with:

Flowers
Bird Sign
Clock
Teacup Lights

Don't worry about RSVPing... I think you just inadvertently attended. I tell you... this is the way to party!

5 Ways to Update Your House on the Cheap

Do you guys have spring fever as much as I do? I mean the "spring cleaning" sort of spring fever, not the "spring allergies" sort of fever (though I definitely do have the second, what is the DEAL March, why do you hate my nostrils?) I am getting that itchy "I-want-to-change-things-immediately-or-my-head-might-explode" feeling at least once a day... and I am on the verge of running out of things to organize.

In leu of continual organization, I am pondering a leap into some decor updates that don't break the bank. Here are a couple of things that have been rolling around in my mind lately:

Make Tablecloth Curtains
For those of you who are nearly as sewing challenged as I am, no sew curtains are a lot more manageable than making curtains from scratch. Basically, if you find 2 table clothes you like, you can hang them as curtains with those very clever clip rings, and still be able to use them as tablecloths in the future.

New Tablecloth
Speaking of Tablecloths, adding a little pop of color to your table might be the easiest solution for livening up your space.

New Bed Set
I hate buying bedding. Our bed is a weird size, and basically no bedding fits it the way it is meant to, which makes shopping for it a pretty unrewarding experience. However- you might not have a horrible disfigured bed, and might actually have the option of adding a sweet comforter to your life. You lucky dog you.

Make New Art
There are a ton of ways to make art without making your wallet weep. You can frame everything from scrapbook paper to pages from children's books. I framed a couple of pages from one of the smartest's old books that had really bold illustrations and it came out really cute!

Make Outdoor Pillows
With summertime careening toward us with all of the speed of an inebriated bumble bee, I am spending my awkward spring weather days dreaming up ideas for summer (and I'm sure I will spend my summer dreaming of fall, its a character flaw). Making outdoor pillows out of vinyl tablecloths is super easy and really affordable- and WAY cheaper than dropping $40 on 4 pillows at Walmart.

Healthy Meal Planning

I have made the executive decision that in March, the smartest and I are going to try a month of healthy eating. Our March is pretty busy looking- so I thought it would be just the ideal time to try my hand at healthy cooking (which may SEEM counter intuitive, but we will be eating out and doing a touch of traveling and celebrating, which means I will be cooking half as much as usual).

Now comes the tricky part. The part where I have no idea how to cook healthy meals. As with all issues with which I have zero experience- I turned to my good friend Pinterest for information. Here are a couple of meals I pulled from my "Suppertime (Skinny)" board:

Santa Fe Salad

Baked Fajitas

Chicken Tortilla Soup

Santa Fe Stuffed Peppers

Goat Cheese Caramelized Onion Quesadillas

Chili Roasted Carrots

Greek Frozen Yogurt

Grilled Peaches

So here's my question to you, oh blogosphere: what healthy ideas do you have. Are these recipes even healthy, or did I get sucked in by the hype?
